Biography

Dr. Gilbert-Walsh was born and raised near St. Louis, Missouri. He received a bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. His doctoral dissertation, supervised by Rebecca Comay and defended in 1999, is entitled “Heidegger and the Question of Community”. In it he argues that, though Heidegger’s work provides the tools for radically reassessing what “community” means, Heidegger’s own manner of framing questions prevents him from doing this successfully and thereby gives rise to serious problems in his thought.

Dr. Gilbert-Walsh has taught several philosophy courses at the University of Toronto and has been teaching at St. Thomas University since 2001, where he has served as chair of the Philosophy Department.
