Message to Community — Condolences to the Family of James K. Irving
On behalf of St. Thomas University, I offer condolences to the family of James K. Irving on his passing.
Through J.D. Irving Ltd., James K. Irving and his family were long-time supporters of our university. From the establishment of the Irving Chair in Journalism in 2004 through to the J.D. Irving Ltd. Scholarships started in 2020, they have been consistent supporters of STU and our students.
For 16 years, the Irving Chair brought nationally renowned journalists and writers to campus to lecture and work closely with students. More recently, the focus of the $1 million endowment shifted to financially supporting students. Now, up to eight New Brunswick students annually receive a significant scholarship to support their studies. These are indeed “gifts in action” that will continue to assist young students through their university studies.
The Prime Minister called Mr. Irving a symbol of Canadian entrepreneurship and philanthropy. He will be remembered for that at STU as the J.D. Irving Ltd. Scholarships will be a legacy commitment to the province and our students.
