Varsity Basketball Pre-Game Ceremony

In the fall of 2016, two Indigenous student athletes, Quentin Sock and Jeremy Speller, pushed to include a pre-game ceremony at the annual Ken Gould Invitational Tournament to honour and bring awareness to the missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.

The student athletes, along with the rest of the STU Men's Basketball team, knelt during the Canadian national anthem while Quentin and Jeremy held up a red shawl. Indigenous student Buffy Peters, also read a moving statement explaining the significance of the red shawl and the campaign it represents.
