The university of the future, we are told, will “boldly reimagine” itself in light of the possibilities of the AI future. But this lecture asks: what do we really want when we “reimagine” education along these lines? Drawing on insights from theorists like Hannah Arendt, Hartmut Rosa, Byung-Chul Han, and Anton Barba-Kay, this lecture investigates the theory of knowledge and of the human person informing the attempts to create artificial intelligence, and considers the implications of these views for education.

This lecture will argue that the shortcomings of these theories are already apparent in our everyday experience of AI and digital technology more generally, and illustrate why the future of higher education lays not in capitulating to the threats of industry or consultants, but in a stubborn, human-scale commitment to liberal education.
