Application Support
Personal statements or letters of intent are often required when applying for grad school, awards, or financial aid. It is a chance for you to talk about who you are and why you should be considered as the chosen candidate. The following information will help guide you in the planning and writing process for a financial aid application.
Writing a Personal Statement for Financial Aid
If you are not able to meet the expenses required for your education, applying for financial aid such as a bursary is a good way to enhance your funds. The goal of this letter is to show your financial need and give examples as to why you are unable to pay for your education.
Make sure you read the application guidelines and address any questions asked.
First Paragraph:
- Explain the purpose of your application and what you will be using the financial aid for.
Second Paragraph:
- Outline your intended educational path and career goals. What degree are you taking, what achievements have you made, and where would you like to be by the time you graduate. Explain why going to university is important to you and that you are a dedicated and hard-working student.
- Because this is a letter of intent for financial aid, it is not necessary to mention things such as extra-curricular activities or volunteer history unless it is required for the application or relevant to your financial need.
Third Paragraph:
- Clearly explain your situation by giving information about any sources of income you may have (ex. student loans, parent contribution, part-time job), and what kind of expenses you have. You want to show why you need financial support. It is helpful to review your income vs. expenses prior to filling out your application.
- Outline any challenges that are contributing to your need for financial aid. Did something unexpected happen, is there a circumstance that is out of your control? Perhaps even with the income you have it is still not enough.
Conclusion:
- Express that you are grateful for the opportunity and appreciate their consideration.
