Spanish and Latin American Studies at STU

Spanish and Latin American Studies at STU is the only program in the Maritimes (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia) that is strictly taught in Spanish. This focus on teaching, speaking, and writing exclusively in Spanish allows students to gain an advanced level of fluency by the end of their degree.

Mary Lou Babineau

"Languages are about the world around us. The more languages we speak, the more we can understand others and build bridges between countries and cultures.”

 Mary Lou Babineau-Rosada

What sets STU’s Spanish and Latin American Studies Program Apart?

  • Small, engaging classes that emphasize personal interaction, discussion, and debate.

  • Lectures and seminars are always taught by professors—not teaching assistants—which means students learn from experts in the field.

  • Students studying Spanish and Latin American Studies are encouraged to enhance their education through a semester or year-long international exchange in Spain, Chile, Ecuador, or Cuba. This allows students to continue their education while fully immersing themselves in a different culture.

  • No prior knowledge of Spanish is required for students wishing to complete a minor, major, or honours in the field.
