Biography
Julia Torrie obtained a Ph.D. (2002) and A.M. (1997) from Harvard University, and a Combined Honours B.A. in History and German from Huron University College in 1995. At St. Thomas University, she offers courses in modern European and German history, as well as comparative and world history courses that focus on themes like social policy and food. She has been a Fellow of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), the Institute for Advanced Studies in Nantes, France and of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and a guest researcher at Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen. A past Associate Editor of Central European History journal, she has served on the Program Committee for the German Studies Association Annual Conference, and on the Academic Council of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences Award for Scholarly Publications Committee. She was Chair of the History Department at St. Thomas University from 2011-2014, and in 2015, won the University Scholarship Award. Fluent in French and German as well as English, Torrie shares her research with specialist and general audiences in Europe and North America. Her research and publications examine European wartime interactions, women’s war experiences, and the history of food globally.
