Tariq Ali Delivers Dr. Abdul Lodhi Lecture in Human Rights

7:00 PM
Kinsella Auditorium

World renowned public intellectual Tariq Ali will give this year's annual Dr. Abdul Lodhi Lecture in Human Rights on "The Frailties of Western Civilization. The event will take place on Tuesday, February 4th at 7PM in the Kinsella Auditorium.

"Whatever else the current crisis has revealed, one fact is undeniable. The double-standards of the West have been exposed like never before," Ali said. "The Cold War period norms can no longer be applied since some of the worst offenders are firm allies or creations of the West. The United Nations, the international courts, etc have been revealed as powerless entities incapable of enforcing international laws without US agreement. Civilizations are mortal. Is the current dominant civilization on its death-bed and if so, what is likely to replace it?"

Tariq Ali is a historian, novelist and film-maker. He has written over fifty books on world history and politics, and six novels that include the Islam Quintet. His latest books are The Dilemmas of Lenin (2017), Winston Churchill: His Times, His Crimes (2022), and most recently, You Can't Please All: Memoirs 1980-2024. He is a longstanding editor at New Left Review and the Chair of Verso.

This lecture is organized by the Atlantic Human Rights Centre and is co-sponsored by the Political Science Department, the History Department, the English Department, and the Sociology Department.
