St. Thomas University will hold its Gala Dinner on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at the Delta Fredericton (225 Woodstock Rd). The reception starts at 6 pm, with dinner beginning at 7 pm.
Bernadette Fernandes and Dr. Manju Varma are being honoured with the Carolyn Layden-Stevenson Distinguished Alumni Award and the entertainment will be “St. Thomas University Welcomes Broadway” with Tony LePage.
The proceeds support student bursaries and activities.

Bernadette Fernandes and Dr. Manju Varma to Be Honoured with Distinguished Alumni Awards
The important potential and transformative impact of a post-secondary education are exemplified by the two recent recipients of St. Thomas University’s Carolyn Layden-Stevenson Distinguished Alumni Award. Bernadette Fernandes, BA ‘85, a successful economic development practitioner and entrepreneur, and Dr. Manju Varma, BA ‘90 and BEd ‘92, a leading equity and inclusion expert in the region, will be honoured by St. Thomas University.
“Bernadette Fernandes and Manju Varma embody the best of what STU offers students and society. Not only have they achieved great standing in their respective professional fields, they contributed to making their communities better,” said Dr. Nauman Farooqi, St. Thomas University President and Vice-Chancellor.
“Their groundbreaking and distinctive professional achievements and determination to make a difference in society exemplify the spirit of the Carolyn Layden-Stevenson Distinguished Alumni Award. Each recipient reflects the high standards of our previous honorees, and we are looking forward to honouring them in October.”
“St. Thomas University Welcomes Broadway” with Tony LePage
Broadway star and Fredericton’s own Tony LePage with musician Mike Doherty and the Don Bossé Jazz Band will perform Broadway musical hits during STU’s Gala Dinner.
Originally from Fredericton, Tony LePage is an accomplished actor, writer, and producer whose work has been seen on Broadway and all over the world. He made his Broadway debut in the hit Rock of Ages where he understudied and performed all eight male characters. In 2009, he landed the role of a lifetime working closely with Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, originating the lead role in The Boys in the Photograph. Recently, he was a member of the original Broadway company of the Canadian musical, Come From Away.
Michael Doherty is an Atlantic Canada and Toronto based composer, sound designer, music director and multi-instrumentalist. He has played in and led award-winning bands, worked as an educator in local high schools and universities, and was resident composer/sound designer and music director for Theatre New Brunswick. Don Bossé was the Director of Music and Fine Arts Department Head at Fredericton High School for many years and is currently teaching in STU’s School of Education. He is the founder and director of STU Jazz and many incarnations of the Don Bossé Trio have played at STU’s special events for years.
