Biography

Matte Robinson graduated with honours in English from St. Thomas University in 1998 originally intending to pursue a creative writing degree. Then he switched to academics, studying Canadian literature while working on his professor’s scholarly edition of a Gothic novel. Then he switched to Modernism and in particular the American author H.D., found his fit, and has never looked back. He received his PhD from UNB in 2008, began teaching part-time at St. Thomas in 2007, and is busy with publications by and about H.D. Dr. Robinson has also had a long professional involvement with ESL and EAP, working for years at UNB’s English Language Programme and serving as interim coordinator for STU’s ESL Programme for two years.

Music has been the other pole of Robinson’s professional and creative life. He joined his first professional band in 1994 and since then has been a long-term member of several Fredericton groups, including The Alex Bailey Swing Band, Vetch, Dub Antenna, the Furnace Hour, and STU’s own Thomists and STU Jazz. He has guest contributed his trumpet and keys to recordings by Ross Neilsen, Isaac and Blewett, Scotty and the Stars, Sleepy Driver, and other local and regional bands. He has composed for a number of short films and a feature-length film. He has also recorded, mixed, co-produced and produced a number of recordings, including Vetch’s last CD Osiris, which he produced and mixed.
