Dr. Dev Gupta received his BA (Hons) from Gujarat University, MA from Delhi School of Economics, and MA and PhD from McMaster University. He was a visiting Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania during work on his PhD dissertation. Dr. Gupta joined the Economics Department at St. Thomas University in 1985. He had previously taught at the University of Delhi (1969-73), the University of the West Indies (1977-82), the University of Toronto (1982-83), and McGill University (1983-85).
At St. Thomas, his primary areas of teaching have been micro and macro theory, quantitative methods, international trade, contemporary economic issues, history of economic thought, mathematical economics, and econometrics. Dr. Gupta’s research interests are in applied econometrics, economics of globalization, and economics of happiness. Dr. Gupta has published six books including four volumes (edited) in the field of globalization and development. His (co-authored) textbook on statistics has also been adapted in French. He has also published several book chapters and articles in refereed journals. At St. Thomas, Dr. Gupta has served as Chair of the Department of Economics, Coordinator of Business Studies, Director of University Research, President of the Faculty Association (Union), and as STU representative on the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. Dr. Gupta is a recipient of the St. Thomas Merit Award for Excellence in Scholarship (1998), the St. Thomas Award for Excellence in Teaching (2001), and the St. Thomas Students’ Union Award for Excellence in Teaching (2000).
