Biography

Peter Toner was born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, and completed his BA (honours) in anthropology at St. Thomas University in 1994 with a thesis on “Yolngu Mortuary Ritual and the Spiritual Cycle”. He obtained a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue his PhD in anthropology at the Australian National University working with Dr. Ian Keen, resulting in his PhD dissertation entitled “When the Echoes Are Gone: A Yolngu Musical Anthropology" (2001). Between 2001 and 2004 he was an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research, Australian National University, working with Professor Howard Morphy. He returned to New Brunswick in 2004 to take up his current position in the Department of Anthropology at St. Thomas University.
