Guidelines for Referees

Thank you for agreeing to serve as a referee for an applicant to the St. Thomas University’s Bachelor of Education Program. Our Selection Committee will consider your assessment and comments carefully.

Professional suitability is weighted heavily in our selection process. Your reference will provide the Selection Committee with information that will help us assess the applicant’s suitability for the teaching profession, particularly in terms of personal qualities and ability to work with young people.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers have compiled a list of attributes to be considered in the selection of applicants.

Referees will receive an automated email from admissions@stu.ca notifying them of a reference request when the applicant submits their application. Please note that reference request emails may filter to an "other" or "junk" folder.

Please complete both steps 1 and 2:

STEP 1: Complete the online reference form which asks referees to rate candidates in the following areas.

intelligence
leadership
creativity
interpersonal skills
organizational skills
time management
flexibility
adaptability

STEP 2: Referees are asked to upload a letter of support.

Your letter of reference should identify the applicant by both first and last names, and include your full contact information (i.e., telephone and e-mail address) for reference verification.  Please describe the context for your knowledge of the applicant (i.e. Supervisor, Employer, Mentor, Volunteer Supervisor, or Professor). Your reference to the attributes and qualities of the applicant’s potential as a classroom teacher are of particular interest to us. We are keen to know the applicant’s work habits and suitability for working with young people. Referees are also encouraged to describe the following additional considerations when writing letters of support for candidates:

empathy
practical intelligence and common sense
divergent, abstract thinking style
high level of commitment
high energy level
ability to handle conflict
willingness to accept responsibility
response to constructive feedback

References must be received by the Admissions Office by the January 15 deadline.
