2019 - Dr. Monika Stelzl
Department of Psychology
BA (UNB) MA, PhD (Western)
Dr. Monika Stelzl holds a BA from UNB and an MA and PhD from Western University and joined the Department of Psychology in 2006. Her scholarly work focuses on human sexuality, specifically female sexuality and pleasure, as well as social identities and migration-related processes such as attitudes towards immigrants. Her approach to teaching reflects her three goals of having students be active in their own learning, conveying the importance of continuous learning, and providing students with the tools to critically evaluate knowledge. Her students consistently comment on her ability to instill in them the “wonderous and unlimited process of learning.” Dr. Stelzl has developed and taught courses relating to her research, including Psychology of Social Influence, Sexuality and Diversity, and a Seminar in Sexuality. Students describe her courses as complex, intellectually stimulating, and delivered in a well-explained and thoughtful manner. In her mentorship of honours students, she strives to help them develop into competent, respectful, and independent scholars. Through these mentorships, she has developed bonds with her students that last well after graduation. Dr. Stelzl regularly invites her honours students to collaborate on her research projects to further their education and offer them opportunities and credentials. In 2018, she co-authored a peer-reviewed journal article with two students titled A narrow view: The conceptualization of sexual problems in human sexuality textbooks.
