Elections

The following rules of Senate deal with the election of faculty and student representatives to Senate.

1. Faculty Representatives:

a) Three faculty representatives are elected by the Faculty;
b) The election normally takes place in March;
c) Nominations are made by any member of faculty; they must be seconded by a member of faculty and the consent of the nominee must be obtained and indicated;
d) The elections are by secret ballot and by absolute majority. If after any ballot three members have not been elected the nominee having the lowest number of votes is to be dropped from the next ballot. No elector may vote for more than the number of candidates to be elected;
e) No proxy votes are permitted;
f) All faculty members (full‑time and part‑time) are eligible to stand for election and all faculty members (full‑time and part‑time) are eligible to vote;
g) The three elected members are not all to be of the same department;
h) One of the elected members should be a part‑time faculty member;
i) An elected member of Senate holds office for one year or until his or her successor has been elected;
j) An elected member of Senate assumes office in the succeeding month of July;
k) A member elected by the Faculty who resigns, or who is unable to take office or to continue in office, is to be replaced by a member elected by the Faculty following notification to it by the Secretary of the Senate that a member previously elected by it is to be replaced;
l) Members of the Senate are eligible for reappointment or reelection.

2. Student Representatives:

a) The student representatives are to be full‑time or part‑time students elected to Senate by the general student body in an election conducted by the Student Representative Council. The President and Vice‑President (Administration) of the Student Union are ex‑officio members of senate;
b) Two students are to be elected; 
c) A member elected by the student body or appointed from among the student body, who is unable to take office, or to continue in office, or who resigns is to be replaced by the Student Representative Council.

The following procedures are followed in the election of student representatives to Senate:

1)

a) Any bona fide full‑time or part‑time student is eligible to stand for election and all bona fide full‑time and part‑time students are eligible to vote; 
b) The student representatives hold office for one year; 
c) The Student Union supervises the election of the student representatives: 

2)

a) each candidate is required to supply a written declaration seeking the position, supported by signatures of ten bona fide full‑time students, to be filled at a specified date;
b) a plurality will suffice for election;
c) the two candidates with the highest number of votes will be declared elected;
d) no proxy votes are permitted.

Appendix B: Senate Representation

There are various committees or bodies which require Senate representatives. Among these are the following: 

1) Academic Computing and Technology Advisory Committee 
Number of Senate Representatives: three faculty members; Term of Office: Date of Election: nomination by senate nominating committee; 

2) President's Advisory Committee on the Budget 
Number of Senate Representatives: two members recommended by Senate (one of whom shall be a student member); Term of Office: Date of Election:

3) Honourary Degree Committee 
Number of Senate Representatives: two Senate appointees (one who shall be a student member); Term of Office: one year with a maximum of one consecutive renewal; Date of Election: usual appointment procedures; 

4) Joint Board - Senate Committee on Future and Growth of STU 
Number of Senate Representatives: three members; Term Office:; Date of Election: nomination by Senate nominating committee
